Refresh & Clear Cache
You can equate this to a "hard refresh" of your internet browser. Browser caching is intended to make our browsing experience better, but sometimes the cached information needs to be cleared in order to allow things to function as intended.
To refresh the page and clear the browser cache you can use the keyboard combination Ctrl+F5 in any browser. To hard refresh a Mac, hold down ⌘ Cmd+⇧ Shift+R.
It's important to note that this is different from pressing F5 alone or clicking the refresh button (circular arrow). The difference is that pressing F5 alone maintains the browser cache while Ctrl+F5 invalidates the cache and forces the browser to fetch the web page from the server (some keyboards may require Fn+Ctrl+F5).
Alternatively, you can preserve your browser's cache and open a separate incognito or in-private browsing window. You can equate this to starting a new browser session with no cache files stored, while preserving the cache files in your regular browsing windows. We will show how to open one of these windows in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox:
Open an Incognito Window in Google Chrome
1) Inside your Chrome browser, navigate to the top right of the window and click on the 3 dots | ![]() |
2) Next, select New incognito window from the drop down menu
(alternatively you can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N to open an Incognito Window, as well) |
|
Open an InPrivate Window in Microsoft Edge
1) Navigate to the top right of your Edge browser, click on the 3 dots | ![]() |
2) Next, select New InPrivate window from the drop down menu
(alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+P to do the same thing) |
|
Open a Private Window in Mozilla Firefox
1) Navigate to the top right of your Firefox browser and click on the 3 horizontal lines | ![]() |
2) Next, select New Private Window from the drop down menu.
(alternatively, you can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+P) |
